Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
