Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
